5508 Brooklyn Ave. NE
This house is at 5508 Brooklyn Ave. NE - the north end of the U-district, a block and a half south of Ravenna. Not a busy street up there, and a mix of regular residential housing and student rentals. It's all of 1/2 block from where U-Coop is located.
Check out the pictures on this real estate website. Go through the pictures. The house looks nice, has a very nice living room, dining room and kitchen (but I wish they hadn't put those half-height fridge and freezer on the opposite side of the kitchen from the sink, under the counter. It has a fancy Viking stove that probably puts out no more heat than ours and has a couple burners that already don't like to light automatically from the sparkers, but is a nice stove with a good hood over it. It has a nice, small, back yard and a garage and parking space (but have to watch the telephone pole) in back, on the alley.
The things that are less desirable:
The main floor has just 1 small bedroom (you can see the entrance on picture 6 on that site) and a massive master bath coming off that. So you have to go through the bedroom to get to the bath or go into the basement. With a queen bed in the bedroom, oriented the opposite way from the bed in the picture (#13 of 19 on the Redfin site) and away from the wall so there's space to get in on that side, there would be an acceptable but moderately narrow (maybe 2 feet wide?) path to get past the bed and into the bathroom. Here's a picture of the other side of that bedroom (sorry, the color is off) - as you can see, no room for 2 chests of drawers in there.
The bathroom is huge, with a sunken bathtub with jets AND a huge shower with shower heads on both sides.
The other bedroom is in the basement. It's actually the first bedroom shown on that site - photo #10. It's larger than the one upstairs. The main thing to be aware of is that the ceiling is low - only 6 feet high. And the basement is only finished in parts - that bedroom, the bathroom (not connected - see photo #14). The steps going down to the basement are typical basement steps, fairly steep, as below:
The room you see straight ahead, just past the fridge, is the bathroom. Here's a picture also showing the sink and window:
There's a laundry room with a door going to the back yard:
And there;s one more, partially-finished, windowless room. In the back left corner, it looks like there used to be a hookup for the washer/dryer that was taken out and they are now in the laundry room above. On could probably pay to have a window cut in the concrete and finish it more to make it a nicer room.
You can click here and get the Google street view of the house. In street view, if you click around the middle of the picture (over the house in that view) and then drag the mouse left or right, it will rotate the view. If you put the mouse over the street, clicking on the arrows that appear will move you up or down Brooklyn.
If we want to put in a bid on that house, we need to start moving tomorrow, so think about it and let's talk tomorrow.

This is the other house I liked, owned by John's friends and not yet on the market. This is where it is located.
It's very nice inside and out. Here's an outside picture of the front.
It has a nice, large living room:
The kitchen entrance is on the left in the back and the dining room on the right. Pictures of them are below:
Nicely landscaped back yard:
A couple of decent-sized bedrooms upstairs, the first being larger:
And a smaller room with pine paneling for a study or office:
And one full bath that is fine but nothing fancy:
The basement is more or less full height and the stairs going down are reasonable, not too steep or narrow. There's a big family room or whatever at the base of the stairs:
And there's 1 bedroom (with a cloth for the closet door. It's a "nonconforming bedroom" as the window is not an escape window, but there is an exit in the basement through the garage as well as up the stairs.
And a bathroom - I forget whether 3/4 or full.
I seem not to have taken pictures of the laundry, but that's also in the basement.
